CLASS RECORDING: Recordings of all live sessions will be available until 3 months after the last class session. (December 4th, 2025)

CLASS LEVEL: This course was designed for students who have some experience using the broad edge nib and who are new to Blackletter calligraphy or for students who want a refresher on this style of writing in a beginner friendly learning environment.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Gothic Textura, a Blackletter style of calligraphy, came into existence in Europe around the mid-12th century. This writing has a woven appearance from its dense, angular strokes, creating a strong texture on the page. “Textura” means an even effect in weaving. The name Blackletter refers to the dense quality of the writing that has very little white space. Because of these qualities this is an excellent hand to practice rhythm and spacing. In this workshop we will learn both the lowercase and capital letters, words and spacing, and will see some examples of artwork that features this script. With Cora’s holistic approach to teaching, you will also be serenaded with live music during class sessions, and we will engage in some loosening up exercises in addition to formal instruction. This short class series will be taught in real time on Zoom with class recordings available for three months after the last class session.

Come join us for fall term online learning through Portland Community College! In this online course taught in real time on Zoom, we will study Humanist Bookhand (also known as the Foundational hand) and Roman Capitals calligraphy in great depth. Focusing with mindfulness and attention to detail, you will learn how to write beautiful letters in this versatile writing style and create calligraphic artwork.

This is a great class for students who are curious about lettering design, for students who want to get a solid foundation in the art of calligraphy, and it is also ideal for graphic design students who want to make more of a connection between typography on the screen and hand lettering on the page. The class is appropriate for all levels of experience.

After spending the first half of the term focusing on learning (or reviewing ) the letterforms, students will complete several projects using what they have learned. The final project for this class is the creation of a handmade book filled with the student’s calligraphy.
